Why Nigeria went into recession - NBS

The Nation Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has pointed out that Nigeria’s economy went into recession in 2016 because relevant authorities largely ignored when it warned that the economy was heading in the wrong direction. Speaking at the 2017 African Statistics Day held in Abuja, yesterday, the Statistician General of the Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale, said the NBS was proactive in identifying the dysfunctional state of the economy but the warning sign data released by the NBS were ignored. “Prior to our entry into recession in the 3rd quarter of 2015, careful monitoring and application of the data would have shown that the economy was heading in the wrong track but this was largely ignored, and the result was a very difficult recession, which affected the lives of households and their businesses across the country,” Kale, who was represented by the Director, Field Services and Methodology Department of NBS, Mr. Babayo Samanja, said. It is supposed to ensure the security and well being of people at the local level. Its responsible for the provision of such amenities as rural roads, local market, pipe-borne water (na land mark achievement to some state governors), primary education as well as settlement dispute at the local level. Adesina-led AfDB plans 25m jobs for youths

The President, African Development Bank Group (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has launched the Presidential Youth Advisory Group (PYAG), an initiative that will create 25 million jobs. PYAG, launched on the side-lines of the 6th EU-Africa Business Forum in Abidjan, would provide insights and innovative solutions for job creation for Africa’s youth as outlined in the Bank’s Jobs for Youth in Africa Strategy (JfYA). The jobs for Youth in Africa initiative aims to benefit 50 million youth over the next 10 years by equipping them with the right skills to get decent and meaningful jobs. “It is currently the largest effort going on for youth employment in Africa. “This is a huge opportunity for Africa. Multiple powerful explosions rock Maiduguri

Powerful multiple explosions rock Maiduguri on Tuesday night, a day after 12 persons were killed by suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers. At least six powerful explosions occurred between 10:45 and 11:00 PM. About four explosives were detonated simultaneously while two other powerful sounds were also heard some 15 minutes later. Unlike the previous explosions, the current blast has a wide-range sound effect, sending its powerful sounds to many parts of the metropolis, forcing roofs to shake. It is not clear where the blast occurred yet and efforts to get the details of the blasts were not successful as none of the official security spokespersons was available for comments. However, a security source told the News Agency of Nigeria that soldiers had fired an artillery at a convoy of suspected Boko Haram insurgents who were trying to attack the city which caused series of explosions. The figure, described as "grossly inadequate" was disclosed by the Ogun state Chairman of NANNM, Comrade Mrs Solarin Roseline. Mrs Solarin while speaking at the Annual Scientific Workshop & Sendoff of Retired Nurses highlighted some of the challenges faced by health practitioners especially in Ogun state.
