Friday November 17 was
a sad day in Italy and considerably in Nigeria, or should we say a melancholic
news traveled over the meditarrean sea into Nigeria, as we got the report that
26 young girls, all Nigerians were buried in Italy.
“The 26 bodies were
retrieved from the sea on Nov. 3 by a Spanish rescue ship, while some 64 people
were unaccounted for and feared lost, bringing the total dead to around 90,
said Flavio Di Giacomo, an IOM spokesman.” NAN reports
It was reported that
the girls, who were given a mass funeral and burial by the Italian government died
in the Mediterranean while they were crossing into Italy from Libya. What a
story! This part takes one’s mind to something. A notion we live with in
Nigeria. PROSTITUTION and HUMAN TRAFFICING.
One cannot wish it
away, as it is common knowledge that some persons have even taken it as a
profession to export young girls as though they were some commodities. It is
just unfortunate that this cruelty persists in our very religious country.
More saddening is the
fact that the federal government, likewise its officers has not deemed it fit
to react to the incident.
Irresponsibility no
doubt is the garment worn by this government, as it is glaring that it cares less
about its citizens both home and abroad.
This is a government
that was quick to react to the political crisis in Gabon some months ago; It was
quick to react to military coups in Burkina Faso and recently, Zimbabwe.
Is anyone even
surprised? There were reports on Thursday that eight different accidents
happened in different sections of the Lagos/Ibadan express way. But as
expected, the federal government and even the ministry of transport did not raise
a brow. One wonders if security is limited to the North East and Boko Haram only,
while the rest of the citizens can go and die
And our religious
leaders. Honestly, they do not disappoint me. We know what they are after; we
know what interests them.
NAN reported that “A
Roman Catholic bishop and a Muslim imam both said prayers at the simple
ceremony in the southern city of Salerno, with 26 wooden coffins lay out on a
stone dais. A single white rose was placed on the lid of each.”
The difference is clear;
some are rendering service to humanity, while some are simply working for the
religious enterprises.
Daddy G.O, with the
powerful anointing of his father, would pray for political candidates that they
win elections; he would pray for those who have sown seeds with six figures of
naira. But unsurprisingly, no Nigerian Pastor is ready to organize a programme
to pray for these souls that perished in the Mediterranean. No Imam has shown
the slightest sympathy on social media.
Well, we must thank
Italy for their show of Humaneness and humanity. They gave these girls dignity,
which their country could not give them even when they live.
All Nigerians share the
condolence for they are our sisters and daughters. We say amen to the prayers
offered by Oby Ezekwesili on twitter that “this would be the LAST TIME we’d
lose Daughters of Nigeria in such shamefully tragic manner on the Mediterranean
Sea!
